Importance of Reading
At Worlebury St Paul’s we believe learning to read is one of the most important skills a child can learn. We strive to ensure every child has the skills needed to become a confident reader and develop a love of reading that will carry them through their life of learning. You, as parents, play an important part in this by encouraging your child to read and developing a daily routine of reading together. Research shows that learning to read is directly linked to children’s success at school and beyond. It also shows that those who read regularly and for longer dramatically increase the number of words they are introduced to. This in turn impacts on their success across the whole curriculum.
As part of our home school partnership, we expect children to read aloud at home five times each week. This should be recorded in the children’s reading records as teachers award ‘Reading at home’ house points on a weekly basis. As a school we have invested in the Bug Club Reading scheme which enables children to develop both their decoding and comprehension skills. For Reception and KS1, books are closely matched to the children’s phonic ability as outlined in Government guidance. Across KS2, even though your child may be a fluent reader, it is vital to continue to hear your child read on a regular basis to develop their expression, intonation and comprehension skills. Sharing books outside of the school reading scheme is also important to develop a love of reading and this can also be recorded in your child’s reading record.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
